Community Resources

We have added a "Community Wellness" resource section to www.ElliottCounselingGroup.com. We plan to add a new page to it each month. So far we have "How to Recycle Anything in Champaign-Urbana" and "All the Free Yoga". Next month we are adding a resource guide for "Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder or other Executive Functioning Issues."

If you have other ideas about what you would like to see on our Community Wellness Page, please email me sandra.a@ecgstaff.com.

The Life of the Worry Doll

by Paige Spangler, LCPC
Elliott Counseling Group, Therapist

When a close friend of mine said her young daughter was grappling with anxious thinking, I sent her a package with a tiny worry doll made in Guatemala. The doll is intended to help children with painful thoughts and feelings. Based on a legend, the belief is that the worry doll can help children manage their sorrows, fears, and worries. At night time a child can tell the doll their worries, then place the doll under their pillow, sleep, and the belief is that the doll then takes away these fears overnight. The child can, in theory, wake up feeling as though their worries were alleviated. This ritual is helpful as it helps the child articulate what it is that is bothering them, which helps them "name it to tame it".

From Me to You

Dear People,

Surgical patients assigned to rooms with windows looking out on a natural scene had shorter postoperative hospital stays, received fewer negative evaluative comments in nurses' notes, and took fewer potent analgesics verses patients in similar rooms with windows facing a brick building wall.

Even small doses of nature in a hospital room has a restorative effect.

The month of May in Illinois is our chance to get outside and let nature be the balm that heals our body, mind and soul. Many people enjoy being outside in very small doses, but being outside for extended periods really is even more restorative. Maybe though, you think that you are just not “one of those people.” I used to not be “one of those people” either. But now I’m preparing for a 700 mile/ 9 day bike trip where I will be out in the beauty of northern Minnesota every day. How did I go from being a couch potato to this? You can read about it here. It’s not just about being an athlete; it’s about dropping your self-limiting beliefs about who you are. It’s about how to get out of your own way, in any area of your life.

Peace, Love, and Healthy Leisure,
